Read the principles governing accuracy, independence, sourcing, updates, headlines and accountability across our work.
Accuracy before speed
Writers and editors are expected to verify material claims, spell names correctly, distinguish confirmed information from rumor and link to primary sources when possible. Publishing first does not excuse avoidable error. Developing coverage should say what remains unknown.
Headlines, thumbnails and social copy must fairly represent the article. A provocative frame is not acceptable when it removes essential context or makes the evidence appear stronger than it is.
Independence and opinion
Commercial relationships must not determine independent conclusions. Opinion and analysis are welcome when they are clearly framed and grounded in accurate facts. News copy should not disguise advocacy or promotional language as neutral reporting.
Transparency and accountability
The policy works with the rest of our public standards rather than in isolation. Bylines identify responsibility, sources should be credited, material conflicts should be disclosed and confirmed mistakes should be corrected. We do not create fake experts, fabricated quotations or misleading claims of firsthand experience.
Editors may update this policy as workflows, law or publishing technology changes. A policy update does not erase responsibility for previously published work.
Questions about this policy
Questions or well-supported concerns can be sent through the Contact page. Include the relevant URL and a concise explanation. We distinguish good-faith criticism from pressure intended to suppress accurate reporting or manipulate an independent opinion.
